“The aim with recording this music was to capture on disc, as much as possible, the spirit and energy that the quartet produces in a live setting. As a result most of the tracks are first or second takes and we avoided the temptation to correct any imperfections at the mixing stage – it’s all there, warts and all! I was fortunate enough to be in a room with three musicians whom I respect greatly and, nerve-wracking as it was at times, with Tommy Smith - who I grew up listening to, behind the mixing desk. When you are working solely with your own compositions there is naturally a greater emotional investment in the music than usual – which adds to the pressure on one hand but gives a huge satisfaction on the other, hearing great musicians breathe life into your work and turning notes on a page into music and energy. Steve, Alyn and Mike all bring a bit of their personality to the recording and they interact beautifully. I’m really pleased with the end result and hopefully we succeeded in capturing some of that spirit.”
